PUNCTAL PLUG
What are Punctal Plugs?
Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices that are inserted into the tear ducts in order to reduce the drainage of tears from the eye. They are often used to treat dry eye syndrome, which can occur when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly.
How do Punctal Plugs Work?
The puncta are tiny openings located on the inner corners of the eyelids that drain tears away from the surface of the eye. By blocking or partially blocking the puncta with a punctal plug, tears are prevented from draining too quickly, which can help to keep the eyes moist and relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome.
Will I notice my plugs?
You should not be able to feel or see the new Form Fit punctal plugs we use in our office. They expand and custom fit your personal tear ducts for an effective and easy procedure.
What to Expect During the Procedure:
Inserting punctal plugs is a quick and painless procedure that can be performed in an eye doctor's office. The doctor will use a small instrument to insert the plug into the tear duct, and the patient may experience a slight sensation of pressure during the procedure. Afterward, the patient can resume normal activities, and the plugs should not be noticeable to others. Our plugs usually last 1-2 years.
Potential Risks and Side Effects:
While punctal plugs are generally considered safe and effective, there is a small risk of complications such as infection, migration of the plug, or discomfort. If you experience any pain, redness, or discharge after the procedure, contact your eye doctor right away.
Amniotic Membrane Graft
Amniotic membrane graft is a procedure that involves placing a thin layer of amniotic membrane over the surface of the eye to help treat dry eyes. The membrane contains natural healing properties that can help reduce inflammation and promote tissue regeneration. This treatment option has been shown to be effective in improving symptoms of dry eyes and promoting faster healing.
